Welcome to SteamBritannia™.com, created to keep the memories alive of the heyday of the steam age. This site initially presents the highest-quality giclée prints of the art work of Guy Maishman in various media, sizes and formats. A selection of his body of work is made available at this time, with more to come in the future. Color photography was in its infancy during the 1930s and was virtually non-existent before then, so the impressions we have of the world prior to the Second World War are mainly black and white. Now that the last combatants of the First World War have passed away, the inter-war period of the 1920s and 30s will be the next to recede out of living memory. Steam power dominated the age, especially on the railways and this provided sights that were unique to the time. |
The works of art available on this site bring color to a black and white age. Giclée prints are available for everyone who wishes they had been there to see the scenes in person and in color. The photographers of the time appreciated the grandeur and beauty of the steam technology that dominated their lives. SteamBritannia™ seeks to recreate the scenes in color - as they existed in the mind’s eye - of those who lived in this era. Browse SteamBritannia™.com, where the best of Britain’s steam age is available in color for everyone to enjoy. Viewing these images gives us an idea of what our parents, grandparents and great grandparents would have seen when they were observing British steam railways in their everyday lives. |
Guy Maishman is an artist who creates original oil paintings of British steam railways and alternative digital versions of those paintings to reflect different time periods of the same scene where appropriate. The originals are inspired by the work of photographers of the steam age, such as Eric Treacy, T.G. Hepburn, H.C. Casserley and D.J. Lane.
